Maiden voyage of the MS Estrela
17 September 2024
APT Travel Group celebrated the maiden voyage of its own purpose-designed and built river ship, the MS Estrela, from Porto on August 29.
The vessel which has been specifically designed for Portugal’s Douro River offers an exceptional cruising experience, drawing inspiration from the rich landscapes and culture of Southern Europe.
David Cox, APT Travel Group’s CEO, boarded the MS Estrela prior to her maiden voyage and wished bon voyage to the fully sold-out cruise, commenting, “Being here as the MS Estrela sets sail on her maiden voyage is a momentous occasion. This ship marks a significant milestone for ATG as we elevate our offerings for our guests. The MS Estrela is the first Douro River ship we have built to our own specifications, and it is undoubtedly the best river ship on the Douro for Australians and New Zealanders.
“Purpose designed with our guests in mind, we have incorporated key features we know are important to our guests, including one of the largest swimming pools on offer on the Douro, as well as a Sun Deck featuring an outdoor bar with comfortable lounging options and a golf putting green.
“We are delighted and proud to have the MS Estrela, meaning star in Portuguese, join our fleet of stars sailing in Europe," Cox said.
On the culinary front, the ship's main restaurant offers a delectable array of Portuguese, Mediterranean, and international flavours for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests can enjoy a light meal in the ship's lounge or dine alfresco on the exterior deck of the main lounge.
Each stateroom and suite features an ensuite bathroom, personal climate control, flatscreen TVs, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The MS Estrela’s balcony suites will boast electric slide-down windows that open to a French balcony, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery of the Douro Valley.
The MS Estrela features in highlight itineraries during her maiden season for both APT and Travelmarvel, including APT’s 14-day Douro Delights with Madrid and Lisbon and Travelmarvel’s 11-day Lisbon with Douro Discovery.
