Five Reasons to visit Switzerland

From Lake Lucerne, to winter activities in Zermatt, here's our top highlights in Switzerland

Switzerland may be smaller than its surrounding neighbours, but this country has a wealth of beautiful nature, awe-inspiring mountains, and charming lakeside cities to offer that also happen to be Switzerland Tourism’s ambassador Roger Federer’s playground. It is a destination not to be missed in any season. Here are our top 5 highlights.

Zurich

Located in north-central Switzerland, Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. To encounter picturesque views of this metropolitan landscape, travellers should climb 871 metres above sea level to the Uetilberg summit. This must-see location is popular both in the warmer months for hiking trails and mountain biking, and in the winter when these trails are covered in snow and transform into sledding runs.

Zermatt

The Alpine paradise of Zermatt poses endless opportunities when it comes to summer activities. Ample hiking and mountain biking trails are on offer in Zermatt's surrounding region, making it the perfect location for vacationers. Adrenaline enthusiasts delight in paragliding, rock climbing, and even summer skiing. Zermatt's quaint town centre is the perfect destination to sample the local cuisines and soak in stunning vistas.

Lucerne

The majestic Lake Lucerne region is a highlight of Switzerland, and the central town of Lucerne is known for its seamless mix of modern and historic architecture. Walk across the medieval Chapel Bridge to enjoy lakeside panoramic views of the surrounding town with its backdrop of alpine peaks. It is also an ideal location to simply stroll through the fresco-adorned streets, over the wooden bridges, and to bask in the beauty of historic town squares. At Christmas, Lucerne’s Christmas markets are particularly magical against the wintry alpine scenery, and there is a vast amount of festive spirit in the air. Jungfraujoch

Known for being the highest railway station in Europe and the literal high point of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed cog railway, Jungfraujoch on the mountain of Jungfrau should be on every agenda for a memorable Swiss holiday. With an altitude at 3454 metres, it will feel as though you are in the clouds. Marvel at the views of ice and snow-capped peaks from the summit. Feel on top of the world on APT’s 13-Day Switzerland by Rail Journey.

Geneva

Bordering France, this city is surrounded by the Jura mountains and the Alps. In Geneva’s vibrant harbour, the centrepiece is ‘La Rade’, a jet that shoots water 140 metres into the air at around 200 kilometres per hour. The Bains des Paquis is the ideal viewpoint of the harbour and this mesmerising water feature. The dramatic alpine scenery in addition to its historic towns and modern cities makes Switzerland a unique and unmissable destination to include in your next European adventure. With other mountains such as Titlis, Matterhorn and Mt Pilatus to explore, there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in nature’s beauty.
